Demand for transport has never been higher than at present. Public transportationavailability and efficiency in the UK differ from places to places. Closer to the main cities’ services are frequent and excellent but congested, while in countryside they’re infrequent, slow if not congested.

Solution for transport problems is only possible with people’s participation and change in our behaviour. At the end of the day, it’s us who are affected by these transport issues in the UK.

We have identified some of the key interrelated problems and solutions for these problems lies in the balanced transport eco-system.

Congestion – Transport System in the UK is heavily geared towards road transportation and it is creating traffic gridlocks at peak times. As per data provided by INRIX, People in London, lost 227 hours due to congestion and people in Birmingham Lost 134 hours. Both cities have been ranked as the worst cities in the UK. In 2018, Traffic Scorecard in the UK analysed congestion and its severity in the top 20 urban areas and reported that drivers in the UK lost on average 178 hours a year due to congestion. This amounted to an average of £1,317 per driver with a combined cost of £7.9B

Cost to people – Public transport and Fuel prices in the UK are one of the most expensive in the world. People in London use more public transport than anywhere else in the world but UK still has one of the most expensive public transport of any capital city in Europe. In a very similar way, Fuel prices very expensive in the UK. These costs are putting severe strain on quality of life on the people in the UK.

Cost to the UK – Time and efforts wasted due to traffic also costs the country since there is no productivity happening at that time and valuable resources are getting wasted.

Time wastage – Longer travel times due to traffic congestions waste lot of valuable time of people and businesses which can be utilised for better productivity and spent quality time with families.

Pollution –Health problems resulting from exposure to air pollution have a high cost to people who suffer from illness. In the UK these costs add up to more than £20b every year.

Not only does air pollution cost our National Health Service and result in worse productivity due to ill-health. Long-term childhood exposure to air pollution can lead to permanently reduced lung function. Dirty air has been shown to affect the development of foetuses as well. Most areas of the UK are breaking EU pollution limits, yet the government’s current plans won’t reduce pollution to legal levels until at least 2020 and 2025 in London.
